Earlier this summer, Hubbie surprised me by getting me an Amazon Kindle. After a few months, I’ve come to the following conclusions:
- I enjoy the feel of an actual book in my hands. Once I got over the “wow” factor of reading on the Kindle, I found myself feeling awkward reading off of it. Holding a thin piece of rectangular plastic doesn’t feel the same as holding a book. I just purchased a leather cover for the Kindle that (I’m hoping) will make it fit in my hands in a more book-like fashion.
- The Kindle books are available for a much lower price, but some of the more interesting small press titles aren’t available yet as ebooks (or, the print book is just much more available on the convention circuit, and I purchase it there).
- For some reason, I feel less awkward reading nonfiction books or magazine articles off the Kindle than I do fiction. I have no clue what that’s about.
Now, all that having been said…I do like it, a lot. It’s one of my prized possessions (as evidenced by the worrying that ensued when I mistakenly thought I left it behind in the hotel room at InConJunction). I’m just hoping the cover makes the reading experience a little less weird.
What about y’all? Do you have an e-reader? If so, how’s it working out for you?
